Cinematch
ROLE: UX/UI DESIGNER | TOOLS: ADOBE XD, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR
Cinematch is an app that creates a taste profile of user's taste in movies, and then matches them to other users with similar tastes. The goal of this app is to connect movie lovers and foster friendships and connections through a love of cinema.

The Problem
According the 2023 U.S. Surgeon Generals advisory, Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation, “Across many measures, Americans appear to be becoming less socially connected over time.”
During a time of descreasing social connectivity and high rates of loneliness, it is time to find creative ways to increase social connection.
A love of movies is something shared by people across the planet. One of the few things that almost everyone has in common.
Cinematch aims to leverage the use of technology and a common interest widely head amongst humans to bring people together and confront the epidemic of loneliness.
Solutions & Project Goals
Design an app that feels familiar, appealing, and fosters strong user satisfaction to ensure high user retention and engagement.
User Interviews
RESEARCH PROCESS
I interviewed participant’s within the target user demographic for Cinematch about
their complaints with other apps and services aimed at social connection, and what they would consider important before downloading and using an app to make social connections.
Insightful comments from participants:
“I feel like apps these days are always trying to push some useless feature onto you. It’s overwhelming. I wish they just stuck to the main purpose without adding unnecessary “new features.”
-Aaron D, 23
“It’s so awkward to message someone for no reason. When you know something you have in common with them it’s so much more natural to start a conversation.”
-Lauren P, 31
Creating User Flows and Lo-Fi Wireframes
RESEARCH PROCESS
I started by creating user flows of different journeys users would take while using Cinematch, and using these flows was able to understand what screens needed to be created.
I then created Lo-Fi wireframes to focus on integrating research findings into my designs.

Creating a Design System
DESIGN
To start the design process, I created a design system and logos for Cinematch to begin to create high-fidelty prototypes

High-Fidelty Protoype testing
PROTOTYPING AND TESTING
My next step was creating a fully functional prototype, and running usability tests to see what needed improvement and what was successful.

Changes to make
The largest pain point from users was the sign-up process. Users felt that it was too long and they wanted to review after creating a profile. I knew I had to:
-
Reduce the number of questions in the profile creation while keeping the profiles detailed for users that enjoyed in-depth profiles of their matches.
-
Allow users to view their profile after creating
Final Designs
Iterations on designs were done based on user feedback from initial usability tests, and another round of testing was done before finalizing designs.

Driven by User Insights
Designs focused on accommodating users and creating delightful user experiences by implementing user feedback, criticisms, and needs. Final designs sought to create meaningful user loyalty and satisfaction.

Emphasis on Social Engagement
Repeated placement of the message button encourages users to spark conversation, and emphasizes the overall aim of the app - to foster social connection.

Connection through details
Profiles allowed users to scroll through different lists of categories of movies to get a deeper understanding of their match's taste, and feel more comfortable connectiong with them.
